Cyrus Currier III Obituary

Known as Cy and Uncle Cy, Cyrus Richardson Currier III was a genuine, one-of-a-kind individual. He was born in Bangor in 1943, graduated from Brewer High School, and went on to study for a year at Moody Bible College in Chicago. Cy earned a bachelor’s degree at Barrington College, joining the Air Force ROTC through Brown University. He took flight lessons, dreaming of becoming a fighter pilot. During his 8-year Air Force career, he spent 3.5 years in Karamusel, Turkey, when he learned to speak Turkish, traveled the country in a VW  Bug, and joined the Turks hunting wild boar. While overseas, he earned a master’s degree in Counseling from Wayne State University.

Back in the states in 1972, Cy was stationed in Great Falls, MT, where he became a father to Karen and Kris. In 1974, the family moved to Plymouth, ME and built a house. He joined the Plymouth Fire Department as a volunteer fire fighter, a post he held for more than 40 years.

Cy loved building radios and talking to folks all over the world on his ham radio as K1TES. He appreciated the Maine woods and taught his kids all about the wilderness, camping, gardening, and survival techniques. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved going to camp, gold panning, and knew how to live off the grid. In the early 1980s, Cy built a windmill in the front yard that powered several lights and a small TV.

In the mid-1980s, he bought land on Etna Road in Plymouth, where he built his second house. For many years, Cy commuted to Augusta daily to advocate for veteran's rights in his work as a paralegal for the American Legion.

Cy was a musician, proficient in playing guitar, bass, and tuba. He had an incredible singing voice and a remarkable ear. He joined several country and rock bands over the years and even played tuba with the John Bapst band at football games, when his kids attended school there.

In 1995, he married Dr.Sally Weiss, and happily gained a third daughter, Andrea. He lived in Bangor with Sally for many years with his beloved dogs. He loved traveling to ham radio festivals in his camper, flying his Tri-Pacer airplane, and finding new projects and gadgets.

Cy was creative, charismatic, and curious. He put his own spin on childhood rhymes with his Fractured Fairy tales, used imaginative phrasing, and had a wonderfully warped sense of humor right to the end. He never lacked confidence or shied away from lending advice, especially about... well... nearly everything, but he frequently shared tips about the stock market, priding himself on his financial wizardry. He loved helping people in need, often quietly gifting donations to help them through tough times.

Cy passed away peacefully on June 24, after a long struggle with congestive heart failure. He and the family appreciated the compassionate care he received from the staff at Maine Veteran's Home and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Cy leaves behind everything he ever owned and will be missed by many, including his wife, 3 daughters, sister, Helen Campbell, and dearly loved dog, Laura.

The funeral will be held at High Street Congregational Church, in conjunction with Brown & Sproul funeral home, in Newport on Friday, July 11th at 2 pm. A graveside committal will follow at the Plymouth cemetery and then a celebration of life at the Plymouth Fire Department at 5 pm.
